Summer Gardening 101

Beginner Vegetables

Leafy Greens:

  • Love cooler temperatures
  • Grow well in full sun in the spring and fall
  • Will produce nutritious leaves throughout the summer if offered some shade
  • Lightly water leafy greens daily or every other day, depending on the temperature

Tomatoes:

  • Love warm weather and lots of sunshine
  • Give them a sunny spot with lots of room to grow
  • Water thoroughly

Cucumbers:

  • Don’t like cold temperatures
  • Place cucumber plants in full-sun with well-draining soil
  • Water them every day

Raised Bed Gardening

Benefits:

  • Control over the soil
  • No digging or tilling the soil each year
  • Less of a weed problem

Tips:

  • Pick a site that gets 6-8 hours of sunlight
  • Don’t crowd your plants
  • Water your plants early in the morning or before sunset
  • Consider using a soaker hose rather than surface-level watering

Final Tips

Add Nutrients:

  • Earthworms naturally deposit nutrients into the soil

Use Composting:

  • An easy, and sustainable, way to add nutrients into the soil

Don’t Step on Your Gardening Soil:

  • Create ample room between the rows
