Recap: 2017 Charities of the Month

Recap: 2017 Charities of the Month

As you know, the BSW Group chooses a non-profit each month to designate as our “Charity of the Month.” This organization then receives a portion of the proceeds from all of our closings that month. Last year, we were able to donate $26,588.00 to non-profit organizations, which is amazing! However, to us, the biggest accomplishment was the fact that we were able to bring awareness to these wonderful organizations that are doing such great things for the community. So, in light of that, we wanted to take a moment to look back on these wonderful charities!

habitat-for-humanity-logoHabitat for Humanity kicked off 2017 as our January Charity of the Month and we were so excited for that because it involves one of our greatest passions: helping someone find a home! Habitat for Humanity builds homes because they believe that everyone, everywhere should have a healthy, affordable place to call home. But more than that, they want to build communities, and they want to build opportunity for families to help themselves and to succeed.

In February 2017, we chose St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Plain and simple, St. Jude is trying to save lives of children all across the country who have catastrophic diseases. They are trying to advance cures and means of prevention through research and treatment. What we love most about St. Jude, however, is that they will never turn away or deny a child treatment based on the family’s ability to pay…and to us, that’s the epitome of giving back.

We went local in March, choosing to support the Colorado Veterans Project. A little less well-known than the previous two, we were so thrilled to be able to raise awareness for this wonderful cause. They host special events in order to raise awareness and funds for local Veterans and Veteran organizations. Their mission is to enhance pride and patriotism in all Coloradans by building a stronger, more supportive community around our Veterans.

April we highlighted the Bal Swan Children’s Center. Bal Swan is a community of families and educators who are partnering to ensure our children have the best chance at success in life. Bal Swan focuses on meeting the developmental needs of children of all abilities in an inclusive environment. They customize preschool services to match the needs of each individual, and children and families are supported by therapy services and highly trained staff. Their goal is to provide children with the support they need to be ready for kindergarten and a lifetime of success.

26113726_1513048712.011Don’t worry, we didn’t just donate a portion of each closing in May to Brent’s house, but we did choose Brent’s Place as our May Charity of the Month. Their mission is to provide Safe-Clean housing and improve the quality of life for children and families living with cancer and other immunocompromising conditions…one day at a time. They work to vigilantly protect the fragile health of patients while also strengthening the integrity of the family unit and enriching day-to-day life. Brent’s Place is providing an unwavering community of support for families going through one of the most awful things, which is why we were glad to help raise awareness and funds for this wonderful organization.

When we can, we love to give back to the local Denver community, which is what we were able to do with this next organization. Child Advocates – Denver CASA’s mission is to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children in the Denver Juvenile Court through the services of specially selected and trained community volunteers from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Their vision is that all children will have a safe and nurturing environment where they can thrive. Our favorite part? CASA volunteers are everyday citizens appointed by judges to advocate for the safety and well-being of children. They stand up to the children and change their lives.

Our mid-year Charity of the Month was an easy one to get behind! MaxFund is a true no-kill animal shelter and adoption center that challenges the traditional methods of animal sheltering by leading the no-kill movement in Colorado. They strive to give animals, including the injured, abandoned and abused, a “second chance at life.” Thanks to our very own Rhyan Diller for helping us select this charity! Now everyone, go adopt a puppy!

We kept up with the local trend and chose the Women’s Foundation of Colorado next. The vision of this organization is to provide a future where Colorado women and girls of every background and identity prosper. They strive to create a community to advance and accelerate economic opportunities for Colorado women and their families.

The Mental Health Center of Denver is working to support anyone and everyone who is struggling with their mental health and well-being. This is a place for recovery and resilience and is also known nationally as a model for innovative and effective community behavioral healthcare. We were very happy to be able to support the mission of the Mental Health Center of Denver as this is such a necessary organization for anyone facing such a challenging time in their lives.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, BSW Group decided to choose the American Red Cross as a charity of the month. At the time, they were working around the clock along the Gulf Coast to help thousands of people whose lives had been devastated by the hurricane which is why this was an easy organization to choose. Not only that, the Red Cross provides relief and support in the wake of any disaster, and they need all the help they can get!

Saola Working GroupWe changed gears a bit for our November Charity of the Month and chose the Saola Working Group. This group is working to protect one of the rarest large animals on earth, the Saola, from extinction. These mammals are found only in the Annamite Mountains of Laos and Vietnam and are facing extinction due to solvable issues such as hunting. The SWG is trying to stop that from happening. We were so happy to be able to raise awareness, not only for this charity but for such a rare and unknown animal.

December, we featured Stepping Stones, a community-based mentoring program in Roaring Fork Valley that provides drop-in centers for youth and young adults. They aim to provide adult mentorship within a safe environment where participants can feel comfortable to share life experiences and challenges. The program also provides free services such as skill development, meals, educational support, basic needs assistance, and arts and recreational programming.

And, that’s a wrap! 2017 was such a wonderful year for us at BSW Group, and a lot of that is due to the fact that we got to give back and support 12 different organizations. We are so passionate about philanthropy and supporting not only the local Denver community, but nationally and beyond. 2018 is well underway with 4 different charities already selected. If you have any suggestions about where we could donate to next, please shoot us an email and let us know…and remember, every little bit helps. We encourage you to take a little bit of your time and money each month to give back to the community that surrounds you. A single person can affect so much change!
